John Williams, staff engineer and pollution prevention coordinator for United Space Alliance (USA) Ground Operations, was honored at the 36th annual Space Congress for his significant and innovative long-term achievements in local defense and aerospace pollution prevention efforts.

Williams accepted the Space Congress Technical Achievement Award in Defense and Aerospace for minimizing and eliminating hazardous waste generated from Space Shuttle ground operations. The results of his efforts include safer operations, decreased environmental compliance risks and significant cost savings that have exceeded $12.5 million since 1991. The process changes that were implemented to accommodate the reductions in hazardous waste generation minimized, and in some cases eliminated, employee exposure to hazardous materials.

In addition to winning the prestigious Space Congress award, Williams recently gave the keynote speech at the Florida Department Of Environmental Protection's Statewide Pollution Prevention Conference in Jacksonville, Fla. The speech, "Effective Waste Minimization for Businesses," challenged the audience to think of new ways to change old business practices to accommodate pollution prevention initiatives. Williams was elected to the Board of Directors of the newly formed Florida Pollution Prevention Roundtable (FLPPR). The mission of FLPPR is to provide a forum for identifying, coordinating and promoting voluntary pollution prevention activities and resources throughout the state.
