Sew and Know...

Part of the Purpose Statement of the Women of the ELCA says "...promote healing and wholeness in the church, the society and the world." The Florida-Bahamas Synodical Women's Organization (SWO) takes "the world" part of this statement to include the ELCA Companion Synod Program. The Florida Bahamas synod is companions with Haiti, Guyana, Suriname, Jamaica and Cuba. Currently, the most active relationship is with the emerging Lutheran Church in Haiti.

The SWO, with the Global Mission Committee of the synod, has agreed to support Lutheran Women in Haiti as they seek ways to improve their life and become self sufficient. One way that is possible is through sewing. A number of different ways sewing coops can help the women become self sufficient are currently being reviewed and finalized. As the plans become clear, funds for the sewing machines will be dispersed through appropriate channels for accountability.

The sewing machines need to be pedal operated, as electricity is at a premium. They are available in Haiti for a cost between $150 and $200 US. By purchasing them in Haiti, it also helps the Haitian economy as well as saving shipping costs.

In addition to sewing, the women of Haiti have also expressed a desire to have Bible in their native tongue to teach each other to read using the Bible as the text. These Bibles are also available in Haiti for under $10 US.

Donations for this cause (in any amount) can be made payable to the "Florida Bahamas SWO", clearly marked "Global Mission, Haiti" or "Sewing Machines".

Donations should be sent directly to the SWO treasurer:
